Girl in pain wants Dental Emergency

Dental Emergency Tips

Aug 29, 2017

Most people try very hard to keep their teeth and smile healthy, but unfortunately, accidents do happen. Knowing what to do when a dental emergency arises can be the difference between a saved tooth and a missing tooth! Here are some tips for the most common dental emergencies:

Knocked-Out Tooth

If a child knocks out a primary tooth, chances are it is not worth trying to save as they will eventually have a permanent tooth in its place. However, we do recommend bringing your child in for an examination to ensure no other teeth experienced damage.

For a permanent tooth, we recommend keeping it moist. If you can place the tooth back in the socket without touching the root or causing pain, that will work. If you cannot do that, placing the tooth between your gums and cheek can help. Placing the knocked-out tooth in milk is also an alternative way of preserving it. Next, get to our Belvidere dental office!

Cracked/Chipped Tooth

Sometimes our teeth crack and chip. If this happens, rinse your mouth with warm water immediately to clean the area. If the injury was a result of contact, place a cold compress on your face to minimize swelling. Next, contact Brechon Dental to see what treatment options can repair the damage.

Debris Stuck in Teeth

On occasion, food or other objects may get stuck between teeth. We recommend trying to gently remove it with dental floss, and never use any sharp or pointed instruments. If you cannot remove the debris, contact Brechon Dental to see how we can help.

Tips to Avoid Dental Emergencies

  • Always wear a mouthguard when engaging in sports or athletic activities.
  • NEVER chew ice, kernels, hard candy, or any other hard objects.
  • DO NOT use your teeth to cut things; they aren’t scissors.
