Having missing teeth can be extremely difficult for a variety of reasons. Whether you have had your teeth knocked out, they have been extracted, or they have fallen out, you are likely considering your replacement options. For some patients, full mouth dental implants may be a great option.
What Are Dental Implants?
To understand full mouth dental implants, you’ll first need to understand what dental implants are in general. Dental implants are metal rods that are placed in the jawbone of a patient to hold a prosthetic in place (via an abutment).
Types of Dental Implants
There are different types of dental implants. Some are intended to hold as little as one implant in place, while others are for an entire row of teeth. The different types of dental implants include:
- Single implants. Single implants are for the replacement of a single tooth. They involve one implant placed to hold one crown in place.
- Implant-supported bridge. Implant-supported bridges are intended to replace multiple teeth but not entire rows of teeth.
- All-on-4 implants. All-on-4 implants are permanent placements intended to replace full rows of teeth.
- Implant-supported dentures. Implant-supported dentures also are used for the replacement of entire rows of teeth. The difference between implant-supported dentures and all-on-4 implants is that implant-supported dentures can be easily removed and snapped back into place.
Full Mouth Dental Implants Cost
The cost of full mouth dental implants will depend on a few factors. These include the location of the office, the specific dentist, insurance coverage, the type of implants, and more. With that said, you can expect implant-supported dentures to cost around $13,500 total and all-on-4 to cost as much as $20-40,000 (depending on the materials being used). While this may seem very high upfront, many dentists offer payment plans. They may be as low as a few hundred dollars a month. There also may be partial insurance coverage. Speak with your insurance provider to learn more about coverage.
Am I a Candidate?
To find out if you are a candidate for dental implants, you’ll need to set an appointment with your dentist. They will perform an oral exam and take some x-rays. From there, they will determine whether or not you are a candidate. A large consideration will be the integrity of your jawbone. If your jawbone has experienced deterioration, implants may not be an option. For some, a bone graft may be available to restore the jawbone. If it goes well, this can allow for the placement of dental implants. Keep in mind a bone graft will increase the cost of the overall procedure.
