What are Regular Dental Cleanings?
Regular dental cleanings are usually performed after a comprehensive oral examination or a scheduled, regular evaluation. Once we have completed the initial exam, unless we have diagnosed a gum disease issue, our dentist or a staff hygienist at Brechon Dental will perform a regular cleaning, or prophylaxis. If you have gum disease, we will recommend a deep cleaning treatment first to treat the infected soft tissue before we finish our regular dental cleaning.
During the first step of your regular dental cleaning, we will use an ultrasonic scaler or a specific dental hand scaler to remove the debris, calculus, and plaque from your enamel, between your teeth and then around your gum line.
When this portion of the cleaning is done, the hygienist at Brechon Dental will follow up with a polishing procedure that uses a special paste, polishing each tooth one at a time. Finally, we will floss your teeth using dental floss, and then we will make recommendations or suggestions about proper flossing technique for you to continue at home.
Once your cleaning is completed, one of our staff members may follow up with you about any other treatment we may have recommended and make any follow up appointments if necessary.
Dental Cleaning for Adults
Brechon Dental recommends that all adults receive teeth cleanings at least twice a year. Good oral health is essential regardless of your age. As we grow older, our risk for an oral infection will continue to increase. The older our teeth get, the more the hard, protective enamel begins to wear thin, and it will become easier to get a cavity. The best way to combat this is by always brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. You should visit Brechon Dental on a six-month preventative basis. We offer flexible appointment times so that you can schedule an appointment around your work or family commitments, making it convenient to get professional teeth cleaning and remaining proactive.
Pediatric Dental Cleanings for Children
At Brechon Dental, we will recommend that you bring in your child for oral exams and cleanings beginning at 12 months, and then every six months after that. Introducing your child early and then regularly to us is an important way to establish your child’s confidence and comfort during your regular dental visits and create a positive relationship with our dentists and our staff at Brechon Dental.

At Brechon Dental, we understand and practice gentle dentistry and will provide dental teeth cleanings for you if you have sensitive teeth. Some adults make the mistake of avoiding the dentist due to their concerns that their teeth will hurt or feel worse during their exam or subsequent teeth cleaning. When working with us, you can feel comfortable regardless of how sensitive your teeth are. We can discuss and offer, if appropriate, a variety of sedation methods so you can relax and not experience any anxiety or feel any discomfort while getting your dental cleaning and examinations.
It is also important to understand the reason why your teeth become sensitive. Often, it is due to the hard enamel on the outside of your teeth wearing away and getting thin. Enamel will wear due to age, your diet and improper oral health care. Brushing with desensitizing toothpaste may help, but you will still need to continue visiting us to ensure that your teeth and gums stay healthy. Otherwise, the sensitivity will only increase. During your dental exam, let us know the level of discomfort you are feeling so we can discuss other treatments to reduce it by using methods such as a fluoride treatment or sealant.
Education for your At Home Hygiene
During your teeth cleaning and examination, we will also discuss ways that you can keep your teeth and gums healthy at home. At Brechon Dental, we believe that good oral hygiene at home is important to do in collaboration with visiting our office. We always recommend you use a soft toothbrush to brush your teeth twice a day, two minutes each time, and to also use fluoride toothpaste. This will remove harmful sugars and bacteria from your teeth every day and the fluoride will help to strengthen them. You will also benefit from the daily flossing to remove any food particles and bacteria from between your teeth. Following up with an antibacterial mouthwash will also help to kill any remaining germs.
Your diet is not only important to your overall health, but also your oral health. Do your best to drink as much water as possible and eat a balanced diet that contains lean protein, dairy products, green vegetables, and complex carbs so that your body gets the nutrients it needs. We will provide additional tips and information during your examinations and your dental cleanings.
