Emergency dental care may be required from an untreated oral health issue that has progressed to the point of being unbearable.
If an emergency dental situation happens, it is best to have a flexible idea of a plan in place. It may be confusing to know the difference between having a dental problem that can wait a day or two versus having a serious problem that indeed requires immediate attention.
Emergency dental care may be required from an untreated oral health issue that has progressed to the point of being unbearable. You can usually avoid this situation, by practicing good oral hygiene habits and scheduling a regular preventative dental exam every six months. This preventative approach will allow Brechon Dental to address problems before they develop. If you notice an ache or pain that is getting worse, do not wait until it is too late to have us identify the problem.
The team at Brechon Dental will embrace you as family. Being family owned for over two generations, we extend our compassion and caring concerns to all patients of all ages. Located at 115 W. Lincoln Ave. in Belvidere, Illinois, 61008, we enjoy serving the entire community and the surrounding areas. Simply call 815-491-8032 with any dental questions or concerns and schedule your appointment today for a proactive examination and to establish your emergency dental plan.
By being prepared and knowing a few tips, you can remain calm and know what to do when and if an issue happens. These tips will help you take the correct steps to avoid creating any unnecessary complications later.
Uncomfortable Toothaches
Toothache pain can become intense, making it difficult to eat and sleep. Serious tooth pain may be caused by an infection or a dental abscess, or by decay that has irritated the nerves. If the tooth pain does not subside with an over-the-counter pain reliever, you should consider it a dental emergency. Call Brechon Dental immediately, and follow these tips:
- Press a cold compress against the outside of your mouth near the sore tooth.
- Use dental floss to remove anything that is lodged near the sore tooth.
- Apply an oral numbing gel to the sore tooth and immediate area.
- Rinse your mouth with salt water to kill bacteria and prevent inflammation.
- Never apply aspirin or another pain reliever directly to your tooth or gums, as this will irritate the gum tissue and make matters even worse.
We will examine the tooth, take x-rays, and determine the source of the pain. The solution may be antibiotics, an extraction, or a root canal to eliminate the pain.
A Broken or Cracked Tooth
If you chip or break a tooth it is important to see Brechon Dental as soon as possible. The sooner we see you, the more likely it is that we can reattach the broken piece. Save any pieces of the chipped tooth that you find and rinse them in warm water. Place them in a cup of milk and bring them to your appointment.
If the tooth hurts, you can ease the discomfort by taking an over-the-counter pain reliever. Hold a cold compress against your cheek, and if you are bleeding, bite down on some gauze to stop the bleeding.
A Knocked-Out Tooth
Having a tooth knocked is traumatic but take a deep breath and remember that we treat this situation often. If you can see Brechon Dental within an hour, there is a good chance we can re-insert the tooth and save it.
Focus on the lost tooth. Pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root, because you want to minimize any bacteria contacting the tooth root. Run it under some clean, cold water, and do not dry it. Put it back into its socket, and bite down slowly to hold it in place until you reach us. If you cannot get the tooth into its socket, place it in a cup of milk.
We will first clean the socket, and then re-insert the tooth in its socket. We will use wire or a special splint to hold the tooth in place. In the next few weeks, the tooth will fuse back to the jawbone, making it stable once again.

A Dental Abscess
A dental abscess is an infection that is in or around a tooth root. They can be painful, and they can spread into the jawbone or even into your blood. Seek treatment for a suspected dental abscess as soon as possible to reduce the chance of the infection spreading. If you have either a fever or severe pain, call Brechon Dental immediately for care. If you can manage your pain with over-the-counter pain relievers, call us in the morning, and we should be able to see you that same day.
You can keep abscess pain under control with cold compresses, salt-water rinses, and sticking to soft foods. Abscesses are often treated with a root canal procedure, or if the tooth is badly infected, an extraction will be necessary.
Loose Braces Brackets
A loose braces bracket is not a reason to visit an emergency dentist at midnight, but it is a reason to see Brechon Dental as soon as possible. Use some orthodontic wax to hold the loose bracket in place. Also apply some wax over the top of the bracket so that it does not irritate your cheek. We will need to re-cement the bracket or replace it entirely.
If an arch wire breaks off or starts poking you in the cheek, this is also an emergency that can wait until the next day. Use a pencil eraser to bend it back against your teeth to stop it from poking you. Do not cut the wire. Cover the end of the wire with some orthodontic wax to prevent it from rubbing on your cheek. Eat soft foods until you have your braces repaired.
A Lost or Damaged Filling
If you chip or crack a dental filling and do not experience any intense pain, call Brechon Dental and schedule an appointment for repair. If you lose a filling completely, you can place some sugar-free gum in the empty space and you can see us to have the filling replaced within a few days. If the discomfort is unbearable, contact us and we will insert a new filling promptly.
An Injury to the Mouth
If you have suffered an injury to your mouth that results in either tissue damage or bleeding, your best plan is to go to the emergency room. The doctors there will suture up any external cuts and refer you to an emergency dentist on call for any damage to your teeth or soft tissues. Until you reach the emergency room, place pressure on the wounded area with a cold compress to control any bleeding. Rinse your mouth with cool water to control any bleeding from the internal cuts and keep the area clean.
