Implant Supported Dentures
Belvidere, IL

An implant-supported denture is a type of restorative appliance that is supported and secured by dental implants.

An implant-supported denture is a type of restorative appliance that is supported and secured by dental implants. A traditional denture rests on the gums and is secured by only denture adhesive. An implant supported denture is a great solution if you do not have any teeth in the arch, but you have enough bone density in your jaw to support the implants. An implant-supported denture has special attachments on the backside that align with the implants.

How the Implant Supported Dentures Function?

There are two versions of implant-supported dentures: a bar-retained and a ball-retained. In both solutions, the denture will be fabricated with an acrylic base that will look like your gums. Porcelain or acrylic teeth that look like natural teeth are attached to the base. Both versions of dentures need at least two implants for adequate support.

  • Ball-retained dentures (stud-attachment dentures) — Each dental implant in the jawbone holds a metal attachment that fits into a matching attachment on the denture. The attachments on the implants are usually ball-shaped, the male attachment, and they fit into sockets, the female attachment, on the backside of the denture. Often the female attachment is a nylon clip.
  • Bar-retained dentures — A thin metal bar that aligns with the curve of your jaw is attached to two to five dental implants that have been surgically placed. Clips or other types of attachments are fitted to this bar, the denture or both. The denture fits snuggly over the bar and is securely clipped and held in place by the attachments.

Benefits with Implant Supported Dentures

Your implant-supported denture will be way more stable than a regular traditional denture. The titanium post surgically secured in your jawbone acts like a natural root. It will deliver pressure sensations when you bite and chew, and it will also deliver hot and cold sensations. You will also find it easier to speak and you will not have to worry about the denture becoming loose.

Proper Aftercare for Your Implant Supported Denture

Brechon Dental will advise you to remove the denture at night and for cleaning. We would also strongly suggest you carefully clean around the attachments.

We will test all the parts of your new denture to make sure they are stable. Even though your new denture is secure, it may still move slightly when you chew. This small movement can cause rubbing against your gums, which will result in sore spots. We will check your gums and the way your top and bottom teeth come together, your bite alignment, after the insertion of your denture.

The clips or attachments on your dentures will need to be replaced every 6 to 12 months. They are usually made of a plastic material (nylon) and will wear after continued use.

The Procedure for Implant Supported Dentures

During your initial examination, Brechon Dental will begin with a review of your medical and dental histories, take X-rays, and then create impressions of your teeth and gums so that models can be made. We might order a computed tomography (CT) scan of your mouth as well. This scan will identify your sinuses and nerve locations. It allows us to make sure they will not be affected by any implant placement. A CT scan may also be done to clarify the jawbone density and to pinpoint the ideal locations for the implants. If you are not already wearing a denture to replace your missing teeth, we will make you one. You will use this temporary denture until the implant-supported denture is placed.

It may take about four appointments for completion. By making this temporary denture, we can also determine the best position for the artificial crowns in the final denture. Once the temporary denture is completed, we will use a copy of it as a guide to help direct the implants in their correct positions.

We will now administer a local anesthetic to numb the immediate area. When sufficiently numb, we will create a small incision and proceed to surgically place the titanium post into your jawbone. We will close the site with sutures. Brechon Dental will usually wait several months allowing the jawbone and the implants to integrate or attach and fuse together. This step delivers the stability of the implant.

When the implants have become fused with the bone, the second small surgery will be scheduled. We will confirm whether the implant is ready for this second surgery by taking an X-ray. This surgery is even simpler than the first. A small incision is made in your gum to expose the tops of the implant. We attach an abutment or extension to the titanium post to reach the surface of your gumline. There is minimal soft tissue healing and then we will make an impression of your gums and these abutments. This is the roadmap for the final denture framework locations of the attaching mechanism.

With your final denture fabricated, we have small adjustments for either a bar-retained or a ball-retained final implant supported denture.
